AI voice clone scams and the family code word

AI can copy a person's voice from a few seconds of video posted online. Scammers use cloned voices to call parents and grandparents, pretending a family member is in trouble and needs money right away. The best protection is a family code word: a word only your family knows, which anyone calling in an emergency must say.

How the scam goes

  1. A call comes in. It sounds exactly like your grandchild, child or partner, crying or panicked.
  2. They say they were in an accident, arrested, or kidnapped.
  3. A second person takes the phone: a “lawyer”, “police officer” or “kidnapper”.
  4. They want money now, often cash picked up by a courier, gift cards, or crypto. And they ask you not to tell anyone.

How to protect your family

  • Pick a code word today. Something that is not on social media. Tell every family member, especially grandparents.
  • Hang up and call the person directly on the number you already have. They will almost always answer, safe.
  • Ask a question only they would know, if you have no code word yet.
  • Never hand cash to a courier. No court, police force or lawyer collects money that way.

Fake videos too

The same trick works with video calls and fake celebrity videos selling investments. If a famous person is promoting crypto or a miracle product in an ad, assume it is fake.
