How to block ads on every device

On a computer, use Firefox with the free uBlock Origin add-on, which blocks ads, trackers and most scam popups. On Chrome, add uBlock Origin Lite. On Android, use Firefox with uBlock Origin. On iPhone, install AdGuard for Safari and turn it on in Settings. Blocking ads also blocks fake download buttons and fake virus warnings.

Computer

  • Firefox: install uBlock Origin from Mozilla’s add-on store. Nothing to set up.
  • Chrome or Edge: install uBlock Origin Lite. Chrome no longer allows the full version.
  • Brave: blocking is built in.

Phone

  • Android: install Firefox, open Add-ons, add uBlock Origin. Use Firefox as your browser.
  • iPhone and iPad: install AdGuard from the App Store, then go to Settings, Apps, Safari, Extensions and turn AdGuard on.

Why it is a safety tool

Most malware and scam popups arrive through ads, even on real websites. An ad blocker removes fake “Download” buttons, fake “your phone is infected” warnings, and the tracking that follows you across sites.

What it does not block

Ads inside apps, like games or social media apps, and sponsored posts. For YouTube on a phone, a browser with an ad blocker works better than the app.
