Fake virus warnings and tech support scams
A popup or full screen warning that says your computer is infected and gives a phone number to call is always a scam. Microsoft, Apple and real antivirus companies never put phone numbers in warnings. Do not call. Close the browser; if it will not close, restart the computer. Nothing was actually infected.
How to close it
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc on Windows, or Command + Option + Esc on Mac, and force quit the browser.
- When you open the browser again, do not restore the previous tabs.
- If it keeps coming back, restart the computer.
- Install an ad blocker. Most of these warnings come through ads.
If you already called
- Hang up. Do not let them connect to your computer.
- If they connected: unplug the internet, then run a scan with Malwarebytes Free.
- If you paid or shared bank details: call your bank right away using the number on your card.
- Change your email password from a different device.
Fake download buttons
Download sites often show several big green “Download” buttons. Most are ads. Download apps only from the developer’s own website, or use Ninite on Windows.
